Top Gun Soccer 2005
Spent an AWESOME weekend in Mira Mesa at the Top Gun Soccer Tournament. The entire team (minus Koko who had some other commitment and Bruce who had visiting grandparents) camped out at a nice little hotel in Rancho Bernardo. The coach had a no swimming rule, but the boys found enough ways to keep themselves entertained. Still too young to be chasing the female soccer players around the hotel, they mostly ran from room to room, watched movies and played video games.
Saturday morning we beat P.V. fairly easily. They are probably closest to us in playing style. The boys are nice and the parents are civilized. Winning isn't the most important thing, and they still spoke to us the next day even though we had beaten them. We played Lakewood in the afternoon. I can't even remember the outcome.
On Sunday morning we played another Redlands Arsenal team (we played a different Redlands Arsenal in another tournament), and in the afternoon, Pasadena Hot Sauce, who was undefeated. We didn't do so well and didn't get to advance to the final rounds the following day. On the upside, the boys got a lot of swimming pool time.
As for Scooter, this was probably the best playing I've seen from him ever! He played more assertively on both offense and defense. His passes are strong and accurate, and his ball-handling is more controlled and tricky. It gives me so much joy to watch him.
That was one well-run tournament. I think this was their 15th year and it shows, in their organization, the officiating, the fields, everything.
In between games, the families hung out together. Fluffy made friends with Emi, Nick's younger sister, so she had a buddy to hang out with. On Saturday, we all went out to a Mongolian BBQ place. On Sunday between our morning and afternoon games, a bunch of us saw "Kicking and Screaming," a stupid soccer movie. During our afternoon game, when we were getting clobbered, parents kept joking, "Where are our Italians?" We were bummed that we lost, but we couldn't dwell on it for long, because we all had to race back to the theatre for another movie. Yep, at the first movie, we all bought tickets to see Star Wars after our afternoon game. So impulsive. So frivolous. So much fun!
Fluffy didn't want to see Star Wars. Luckily, I was able to trade our tickets and we saw "Madagascar" instead. We got out a lot earlier than the Star Wars bunch, so we hung out at Barnes & Noble for an hour or so. Then the whole gang got take-out from Pick Up Stix and we all ate in the hotel dining room.
It was a great weekend. This is exactly the type of outing every group needs. Instead of retreating into our rooms or little cliques, we all hung out together, sharing rides, food and drink, and it was truly a bonding experience. We all left on Monday, relieved to be going home, but a little sad knowing that next weekend is our last tournament and the last time we will be together as a team.
